Far North Queensland 2019

Cairns, 14-17 June

Our first day in Cairns, we visited Lake Barrine, a volcanic crater lake on the way up to the Atherton Tablelands. †
The area obviously gets a lot of rainfall. †
  *

Coming down the range from Kuranda to Cairns, there were good views of the coast ... *
  and Cairns airport. *
  *
Cairns has a very pleasant waterfront, including this large free pool area. *
Early on 16 June, we were joined by our son Cameron, who now lives in the USA with his wife and their son, Ryden. *
We ate that night in a good restaurant at the Cairns Aquarium. *
The next day, we headed off to Millaa Millaa Falls, on the Atherton Tablelands and quite a bit south of Cairns. †

The younger members of the family went for a swim in the pool at the base of the falls. †

We had lunch at a nearby cafe, with this view over the tablelands. †
The next day, we took the historic train journey from Cairns to Kuranda. †
The Barron River Falls used to be magnificent, but a combination of low rainfall and diversion for hydro electricity left only a trickle for us to see. †
The Barron River near Kuranda. *
We went back to Cairns on the Skyrail cable way, giving good views of the rain forest. †
  *

When we got back to Cairns, we drove on to stay at Port Douglas.
